Measure your driveway length and width. For a proper base, you'll need 6-8 inches of material. A typical 12x50 ft driveway needs about 12-15 cubic yards. Order 10% extra for compaction.
Remove vegetation, topsoil, and debris. Grade the area to create proper drainage—crown the center slightly higher or slope to one side. Compact the subgrade soil thoroughly.
For soft or clay soils, lay geotextile fabric before adding base material. This prevents the base from sinking into soft ground and extends driveway life significantly.
Spread 4 inches of limestone base or crusite. Limestone base compacts extremely well and creates a rock-solid foundation. Rake smooth and maintain your crown or slope.
Use a plate compactor or roller to compact the base layer. Make multiple passes. Water lightly and compact again. The base should feel rock-solid when you walk on it.
Add 2-3 inches of finish material—either more limestone base for a utility look, or decorative gravel for curb appeal. Compact the final layer and edge as needed.
Limestone base is the go-to material for Texas driveways—it compacts to an almost concrete-like surface while still allowing drainage. For heavy vehicle traffic, go with 8 inches total depth minimum. Edge with steel edging to prevent spreading.
