📋 Step-by-Step Guide

1

Choose Your Location

Select a level spot at least 10-20 feet from structures, trees, and overhangs. Check local fire codes—many areas require specific setbacks. Avoid areas with underground utilities.

2

Mark & Excavate the Area

Mark a circle 10-12 feet in diameter for the seating area. Dig down 3-4 inches and remove all grass and roots. Level the bottom and compact the soil.

3

Install Landscape Fabric

Lay heavy-duty landscape fabric over the entire area. This prevents weeds from growing through your gravel. Overlap seams by 6 inches and secure with staples.

4

Set Your Edging

Install flexible steel or aluminum edging around the perimeter. For a more natural look, use larger stones or pavers as a border. This keeps gravel contained.

5

Add Pea Gravel

Fill the area with 2-3 inches of pea gravel. Pea gravel is perfect for fire pit areas—it's comfortable underfoot, drains well, and won't spark or pop from heat.

6

Position Your Fire Pit

Place your fire pit in the center. For DIY fire pits, use fire-rated materials only. Leave 3-4 feet of clearance on all sides for safe seating distance.

⚠️ Safety First

Never use river rocks, wet stones, or concrete blocks in fire pit construction—they can explode when heated. Always use fire-rated bricks or a manufactured fire pit ring. Keep a hose or fire extinguisher nearby.

💡 Pro Tip

Pea gravel is the #1 choice for fire pit areas because it's comfortable to walk on barefoot, stays cool, and won't throw sparks. For a more polished look, add a ring of larger decorative stone around the fire pit itself.
