📋 Step-by-Step Guide

1

Plan Your Drain Path

Identify the water problem area and plan a downhill path to a suitable drainage point (street, dry well, or low area). Use stakes and string to mark the route. Ensure a minimum 1% slope (1 inch drop per 8 feet).

2

Call 811 & Dig the Trench

Call 811 to mark utilities before digging. Dig a trench 12-18 inches deep and 6-12 inches wide. Maintain consistent slope throughout. Remove any roots or debris from the trench.

3

Add Landscape Fabric

Line the trench with landscape fabric, leaving enough excess on both sides to wrap over the top later. This prevents soil from clogging the drain over time.

4

Add Base Layer of #57 Stone

Pour 2-3 inches of #57 stone (3/4" Limestone) into the bottom of the trench. This creates a solid drainage base beneath the pipe.

5

Install Perforated Pipe

Lay 4-inch perforated drain pipe on top of the gravel with holes facing down. Connect sections securely. The pipe carries water away while gravel allows water to enter.

6

Cover with #57 Stone & Wrap

Cover the pipe with more #57 stone until 2-3 inches from the surface. Fold the landscape fabric over the top to completely enclose the gravel and pipe.

7

Backfill & Finish

Cover with topsoil and sod, or finish with decorative gravel. Leave a small mound to account for settling. Test with a hose before finishing.

💡 Pro Tip

Use clean, washed #57 stone (3/4" Limestone) for best drainage. Avoid using crusite or limestone base—they compact and reduce water flow. For longer drains, add a cleanout access point every 50 feet.
