📋 Step-by-Step Guide

1

Plan & Mark Your Area

Decide on your patio size and shape. Use stakes and string to outline the area. For a 10x12 patio, you'll need about 3-4 cubic yards of gravel. Add 6 inches beyond your planned size for edging.

2

Excavate the Area

Remove grass and dig down 4-6 inches. Create a slight slope (1-2%) away from your house for drainage. Compact the soil with a tamper or plate compactor.

3

Install Landscape Fabric

Lay landscape fabric over the entire area, overlapping seams by 6 inches. This prevents weeds from growing up through your gravel. Secure with landscape staples.

4

Set Your Edging

Install steel, aluminum, or plastic landscape edging around the perimeter. This keeps gravel contained and creates clean lines. Secure edging with stakes every 3-4 feet.

5

Add Base Layer (Optional)

For extra stability, add 2-3 inches of crushed limestone base and compact it. This creates a firm foundation, especially important for furniture and high-traffic areas.

6

Spread Your Finish Gravel

Add 2-3 inches of decorative gravel (Black Star, pea gravel, or decomposed granite). Rake smooth and level. Compact lightly for a stable walking surface.

💡 Pro Tip

Black Star gravel creates a stunning, modern look and stays cooler than dark materials. For the most stable surface, use decomposed granite—it compacts almost like concrete while still allowing drainage.
