Remove weeds, old mulch (if decomposed), and debris. Pull weeds by the roots—don't just snap them off. Edge your beds for a clean, defined border.
For maximum weed prevention, apply a granular pre-emergent herbicide before mulching. This creates a chemical barrier that stops weed seeds from germinating.
Measure your bed area (length × width). You need about 1 cubic yard per 100 square feet at 3" depth. Order 10% extra to account for settling.
Have mulch dumped as close to beds as possible. Use a wheelbarrow to move mulch to the beds. Dump piles throughout the bed rather than one big pile.
Use a rake to spread mulch evenly to 2-3 inches deep. Too thin won't suppress weeds; too thick can suffocate plant roots and hold excess moisture.
Pull mulch 2-3 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks. Mulch touching stems causes rot and invites pests. Create a small "donut" around each plant.
Water your beds before mulching if the soil is dry. Mulch locks in existing moisture, so starting with damp soil gives your plants a head start. Best time to mulch in Texas: early spring (March-April) or fall (October-November).
